Depend on typographic history and theory as context for development, refinement, and understanding of typography. The relationship between word as message and its transformation into visible form will be explored.
Prototypeface
I conducted research on existing letterforms and analphabetic symbols and looked at various type catalogs, graphic design books and magazines as well as online at type foundries for ideas. Learned what makes a font look like a family and studied the curves and the proportions of characters. After I did more visual research, I came up an idea that inspired by circle stroke to create forms. It based on the circle stroke that work together as a set. It works in black and white, also each character fits in approximately 1.25 inches square.
Type Anatomy
Over the centuries a vocabulary has evolved that identifies the various components of individual letterforms. By learning this vocabulary, I developed a greater understanding and sensitivity to the visual harmony and complexity of the alphabet. I understood that each typeface has unique characteristics distinguishing it from others.
Below I designed a page to illustrated and communicate the proper terminology for the different anatomical parts of the letterform. I used a mix of upper and lowercase letters and chose Minion typeface as the example letters. In the meanwhile, I chose Palatino Italic typeface as the contrasting typeface for the labeling of the terms.
Typesetting
Typesetting skill is a basic building block of graphic design. The emphasis on this project is on craftmanship and accurate handling of type. Below I created 4 pages which showing one of these alignments: Set Left, Set Right, Justify, Center. I also used the illustrated format for the colophon and layout. The typeface I chose is readable, so it is always set upper and lower case.
Kerning
Tracking is the overall spacing used in a series of letterforms. Kerning is the spacing relationship between two specific letterforms. Many factors determine the accuracy of the kerning tables that come with a digital font: the type of font, its format, release date, the foundary, etc. Some are better"out of the box" than others, but virtually all fonts will need some kerning to look their best.
